More article summaries

The ability to write effective summaries is a key component of all types of rhetoric. A summary requires you to:
Synthesize and analyze information
Present that information in a succinct and logical form to the reader

For this week’s assignment, select an article from the news, local, feature or business sections (NOT sports or entertainment) from one of the following sources:

http://www.dunnconnect.com/
http://www.leadertelegram.com/
http://www.twincities.com/
http://www.madison.com/wsj/

Read it, then write a summary. Remember, a summary should include the key items in the article. A summary should also be brief and to the point. A reader should be able to clearly understand what the article was about, any conclusions by the article’s author, and where to go to read the full article. Write your summary and include which of the above sources you used, the title of the article, the date and the author.

Fall colors about two weeks away

Little rain this year will keep the fall colors from being as beautiful as they have been in past years. Still in a couple of weeks the colors will be at peak color. Warm sunny days and cool nights of temperatures below 45°are the fall weather conditions that turn these leaves the vibrant red autumn colors. When the sugars get trapped in the leaves, a pigment called anthocyanin produces the red and yellow colors. The leaves in the sun turn red while the leaves on the same tree, in the shade turn yellow. The colors also change from year to year.

I read the article Wife of Murdered reservist gets life, in the Associated press. In this article a wife of a Navy reservist was sent to life in prison, Wednesday after pleading guilty. He was shot by her teenage lover and his friend. In December, 2005 was shot in the head after coming home from the Middle East. He was gone for almost a year before returning home. The two 20 year olds pleaded guilty in murdering Paul Berkley. Wife Monique Berkley would then receive $400,000 of life insurance, and the three of them would split it. She met the young adults from her husband’s teenage children.

The article I read was about the TRAC trucking company closing in Menomonie. The article stated a brief apology from the former owner of the company, which also included a brief explanation as to why the doors were closed. At the end of the article there was a couple of comments from former employees and their families; none seemed to impressed.

"St. Croix on notice"
BY MARY DIVINE and DENNIS LIEN
Pioneer Press
9/26/2007
From twincities.com
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency declared the St.Croix river, or at least a 20 mile portion of it, does not meet do not meet water-quality standards under the federal Clean Water Act. According to MPCA officials the phosphorous levels are too high. "This is a wake-up call," said Kate Hanson, resource management chief with the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway. "I think we take for granted that because the St. Croix is in a protected status, that it has good water quality. But this summer, for the first time, there were visible algae blooms." Environmentalists are using the addition of the St. Croix River to the impaired-waters list to argue against a proposed bridge south of Stillwater. Some say the bridge would worsen the condition of the water, but others claim the opposite.

Dead? You Still Have to Pay Library Fine
Apparently in Harrison, NY even if you’re dead you still need to pay any over due charges for library books. Elisabeth Shaper found this out after finding a library book in her mothers’ home a week after she passed away. Upon returning the book the Liberian told Elisabeth that she owed 50 cents. She explained the situation and the Liberian again said, “That will be 50 cents please”. The incident was confirmed by Connie Perrotta, a secretary for the director of the Harrison Public Library, but said the library had no comment.

How a Tractor Helped win WWII, the reason that a tractor helped win the war was because of the technology of the single row corn picker. Back then that was the biggest breakthrough in farming technology.

Committee delays decision on mining ordinance
Committee delayed making decision about changes to the county’s zoning ordinance regarding nonmetallic and metallic mining. The proposed changes to the ordinance would eliminate a special exception both nonmetallic mining and metallic mining in all agriculturally-zoned areas in the county. Additionally, metallic and nonmetallic mining would be permitted to be used only in industrial zones in the county. Those who are in favor of the ordinance change were interested in protecting the health, safety and welfare of the residents and protecting the county. The people that are opposition to the proposed changes are businesses already operating nonmetallic mines in the county. Business owner proposing to operate sand mine, and landowner that wished to have sand mine operated on there property.

The article about solders coming home was very interesting. It told about three different solders, and how they are adjusting to life at home after being in the Middle East for a year. One solder is going to be a stay at home dad for awhile, the other is going to take a couple weeks before he goes back to work, and the last solder is going to start back to work in a week or two. It told how one solder is still very jumpy when he hears sounds that remind him of being in Iraq.

I read the article on the Trac trucking company closing. It was quite a shock to me. The employees weren't impressed and the Employer didn't make it sound like much of an apology to me.
